LIFE IN GARO HILLS by Tim Mohan;Episode 1. (January week 3, just arrived): “Fr Sunny is very friendly, funny and helpful, except he's had to go to South India because he was suddenly taken ill. The nuns and other staff are also very helpful and friendly and are looking after me. I have already been to lots of places and met lots of interesting people. It sometimes seems like everyone is just milling about, or mixing concrete! There are huge piles of sand everywhere and people just mix concrete all day. There's a missionary centre of Mother Teresa next door and I've visited them a few times; they are very friendly, but always busy. There's lots happening: polio programmes; the training centre; the farm etc. I had to drive too, which was a bit mad! I'll be away from base for a week and a bit and have to drive to a place called Rongara…I think.” Episode 2. (January week 4): “Fr Sunny came back last night. He's had malaria more than 100 times now. I went to one of the Primary Health Centres (PHC) that Bakdil runs called Babadam, which is in a really lovely spot. The people there were really cool; I met some young people who were very friendly. Also met lots of tribal people in their villages; they're incredibly shy but very sweet. The villages are amazing, all traditional bamboo. Had to have some of their homemade rice-beer! Rongara was really interesting too; there was a nice priest there. Rongara is only a few km from Bangladesh and the journey was amazing. They were having a celebration weekend and had constructed a 100x50ft church, entirely out of bamboo. They gave me lots of their super expensive Darjeeling tea.” Episode 3. (February week 2): Still having a great time; been to a parish in Chapahati and Ampati and joined their sobha, which is a weekend conference/ celebration in a big bamboo church. There were over 300 confirmations at the Sunday Mass! All the priests are very nice and good friends with Fr Sunny. Episode 4..(February week 3): Have been at Salmanpara primary health centre (phc) for a week which was great. I am now back at Bakdil, which is nice. I am staying in a little room here; I've taken lots of photographs so don’t worry, all will become clear. I have had some fresh organic yoghurt from Bakdil’s farm and it was amazing. If you like Greek Style Yoghurt; you’d love this. Going to Shillong (the state capital) on Thursday till Sun/Mon I think. A baby was born the minute I arrived at one of the phcs and they said they should name it after me! Fr Sunny is rarely here and is very busy and tired but always cool!!! Episode 5. (February week 4 Final Entry) I feel like I’ve done a lot since I last wrote to you! I have visited Shillong which was very interesting, lots of lovely old colonial buildings, but then also loads of horribleconcrete stuff. One of the sisters at Salmanpara organised for me to stay at the Don Bosco College and her uncle and aunt showed me around. I was very grateful to them and they treated me like an old friend, which was nice! I am leaving Meghalaya now and am going to do some backpacking. I am sad to leave, but am now making my way to Darjeeling, which is very exciting. |
